Grenda Harmer, the inmate in the state prison in Wartburg, Tenn., is safe today after a member of the Crips gang was removed from a nearby cell from which he had been given ready access to Mr. Harmer, whom he had threatened before. (Nov. 14, 2017) — Late last month, TDOC inmate Grenda Ray Harmer, #88710, reported to The Post & Email and to David to Tulis of the “Nooganomics” radio show and website that a member of the Crips gang who entered his cell three months earlier brandishing a knife was placed in a cell directly across from his in violation of TDOC policy.
Harmer has been housed at the Morgan County Correctional Complex (MCCX) since early June.
When he learned of the development, Tulis relayed Harmer’s concern to TDOC Communications Director Neysa Taylor, who had previously claimed that Harmer’s letters are “fictitious.” Taylor at first suggested to Tulis that the onus was on Harmer “to request a transfer or change of cell assignment.”
She denied Tulis’s interview request with TDOC Commissioner Tony Parker either on- or off-air.
However, in response to a follow-up email from Tulis, Taylor suggested that an investigation of Harmer’s claim had been launched.
Harmer’s situation, and that of the TDOC in general, was the topic of conversation last Thursday on Tulis’s show with this writer. On Friday, Tulis hosted Tennessee state Rep. John Ray Clemmons (D) of Nashville in-studio, where the two discussed Tennessee prison conditions for approximately 30 minutes.
In a letter dated Nov. 6 to Tulis, Harmer wrote that the Crips member was relocated out of his area and took Taylor to task for allegedly being “paid to lie for the TDOC.”
