“I went before the judge, to stand up there to the plate, so the speak. He opened the envelope, read the charges against me — the police report. And he said out loud to me, ‘You have the right to free speech.’ And I said, ‘Well, I thought I did, your honor.’ So he reads a little more, and he reads the disorderly conduct charge, and he says out loud, shaking his head, he says, ‘Disorderly conduct?’ And I said, ‘Yes your honor, I’ve been told by quite a few police officers, they use that charge to arrest you for just about anything. And for that reason your honor, I ask you to dismiss this case on my right of free speech.’ And he said, ‘That’s exactly what I’m going to do, Mr. Nix. Have a good day.’ And I said, ‘Thank you very much, your honor.’ And he just about brought me down to tears. So I went out, outside the courtroom, and I cried out, I said, ‘Thank God we still have free speech in America today.’”
