Great questions and well articulated. Obvious answer: we are not a free people by our own choice.
Freedom and democracy are opposites. We have a choice to place leaders over us, or in the transliterated Greek “archōn”. If we do not ask for a leader we have anarchy. Note that using the Greek source, this is without leader, and not violence as often defined.
In a democracy we ask for a leader by voting. The leader is our ruler or king. 1 Samuel 8 makes it clear the cost we will pay, and whom we are rejecting.
I have repented and now choose to live free.
