The doctrine of the lesser magistrate requires elected officials to defend law, justice, honor and members of the public from evil laws by barring their imposition within the area of his authority. The concept is best understood in terms of the covenantal nature of reality. God requires human government to operate in terms of His revelation, for His glory and for the benefit of the people of a nation or kingdom. Sheriffs, county clerks, county and city mayors have a duty to defend truth and liberty as against despotic acts by authorities in far off places.
