Civil asset forfeiture law yields private cars to highwayman, shields commercial vehicles

  The distinction in Tennessee law between travel and transportation is found everywhere. Today I am talking with state Rep. Mike Carter regarding reform in the civil asset forfeiture statute that pares back some of the evils of state’s highwayman program. The reforms are good, but they don’t alter the focus of the statute, which is against people on only one side of the travel-transportation distinction. Civil asset forfeiture is aimed only at travelers (private), and overlooks and does not try to injure people involved in transportation (corporate, commercial, for profit).
